What We Offer
Hyde Park Residential Center has been created to offer clients a warm, homey setting on their journey into recovery. Their residence here will be in a closely grouped complex of genuine “turn of the century” Victorian homes, originally built as private homes in the 1800s when Tampa was still a small harbor town. However, everything has been updated with all the modern conveniences we have become accustomed to in today’s world. Here, our clients can begin the road to recovery while enjoying the warmth of real fire-places in winter, modern air-conditioning in summer, and tall windows that flood the rooms with Florida’s year-round sunshine. Rooms are appointed with French doors, hardwood flooring, spacious front porches and airy second-story balconies – comfortable, calm, genteel – genuine “old world” touches that our clientele finds reassuring and restful. Our 2 story residence offers three bedrooms and three full baths, walk-in closets, a living room, and dining room, and a fully updated kitchen on each floor.Best of all, the famed Bayshore Boulevard is only one block away – often called “the longest waterfront sidewalk in the world,” it offers five miles of balustrade sidewalk overlooking the waters of Old Tampa Bay.Also, Tampa General Hospital, one of Florida’s top-ranked medical facilities, is within a stone’s throw from our front door.
While we do offer other programs, our primary focus – our “raison d’etre” – is treating women with Chemical Dependency/Eating Disorders. We approach treatment with a synergistic program consisting of..
- Group Therapy
- Group therapy is a focused or topical session, led by a therapist. During group therapy, clients begin to see that they are not alone and that there is hope and help. It is imperative to hear that other people have had similar experiences. To realize that you we are not alone is often where recovery begins.
- Family Therapy
- Many times, by the time our clients reach out for help, much damage has been done to relationships within the family. During family therapy, the therapist will teach all those involved healthy communication skills, how to set strong and effective boundaries as well as answering questions such as, “Why our family?”
- REBT – Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
- (REBT) teaches individuals to examine their own thoughts, beliefs and actions and replace those that are self-defeating with more life-enhancing alternatives. Clients will learn to challenge and question irrational thoughts while learning the difference between thoughts and feelings. Ultimately, we want our clients to be proactive by changing her thinking she can change her life
- Community activity
- Each Saturday, clients go on a supervised outing of their choice. It is our aim during this “group” to introduce fun in recovery. It has been our experience that this kind of holistic – i.e., “whole person, whole problem” – approach offers a more rewarding and lasting outcome.
- Intervention
- Intervention is a recognized therapeutic process of getting a chemically dependent and or active eating disorder person and her family professional help. Interventions are orchestrated by a therapist that has been trained in the process of intervention. It is through a joint effort with family members the identified client is presented data about her chemical dependency and or bizarre eating behavior and the care and concern of the family members. - Body Image
- Negative body image means a person has a distorted perception of their shape and size. During body image group, we explore the concept of body image and discuss the steps towards positive body image.
- Nutrition
- We live in a society that has many different ideas of what a “healthy” diet should and should not consist of and sometimes these assumptions can lead to disordered eating patterns. Our goal is to help you develop a normalized eating pattern, a healthy relationship with food and how to balance and include all foods in your diet. During nutrition group, we process fears about food, discuss the science of nutrition and educate you on how the different nutrients function in the human body.
- Psyhcodrama Group
- Pyschodrama is the use of action techniques to explore a client’s private and public world in a multi-dimensional way. It is also used in helping the client express unexpressed feelings and to find practice new ways to change unsatisfying situations in life. Psychodramatic interventions are designed to encounter people where they are in the present and assist them in contacting and developing the best that is within themeselves whatever their functioning level. Psychodrama reinvests power in the client. The use of psychodramtic therapy emphasizes creativity and spontaneity rather than illness and psychopathology.
- EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a treatment modality, which can be very helpful in working with trauma issues and other distressing life events. It integrates elements of many effective psychotherapies such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, experiential and body centered therapies. EMDR is an information-processing model; when a traumatic or distressing event occurs, information processing may be blocked due to strong negative feelings or disassociation. Through EMDR, the information processing system is activated, using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements and alternating tones and taps; this allows the disturbing material to be processed resulting our clients access to more adoptive ways of coping.
Additionally, we require all clients to attend 12-Step meetings throughout their involvement at Hyde Park Counseling Center. Yes, we know all the jokes about “12-step” programs. But, trust us, there is a good reason why those programs are so often employed by professional therapists: They work.
